Here's a good news for all parishioners of Mira Road, Mumbai, India.
The Local Church of Mira Road has started a website for the church stjosephchurchocd.org.

St. Joseph Church, one of the most vibrant and dynamic parishes in mumbai ranks second with respect to the numbers of parishioners. Run by the Carmalite priests the church has seen a lot of changes and efforts to make it more dynamic and improve the spiritual well beig of the people.

This Website contains all information regarding the various church activities and a brif discription of the various association and cell formed in the church as well as the information of the choirs , history of the parish , the preists that have serverd the parish over the years.

The wesite was developed as an initiative taken by Fr. Rudolf D'souza, the then parish priest and under his guidance the webiste was developed by Mr. Merwyn Mathew - the Designer and Concept Head and Mrs. Dancia Jos - Website and Software Programming Head.

The photographs of the various feast celebration have also been posted on the website.

Unravelling the Secrets of the Dead Sea Scrolls

For centuries, the Dead Sea Scrolls remained unread, keeping their secrets about the earliest years of Christianity.

Even after their discovery in caves by the Dead Sea in 1947, many scrolls were too brittle to be read without destroying them.

Now research at the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences at the UK-based University of Cardiff could provide the key to unlocking those secrets.

The Head of School, Professor Tim Wess, has been working with Diamond Light Source – a new scientific facility in Oxfordshire, UK – and developed techniques to read the written words without unrolling the fragile documents.

The Diamond machine is the size of five football pitches and fires electrons at close to the speed of light to generate what is known as synchrotron light, in the form of X-rays, ultraviolet and infrared beams.

The X-rays generated can be 100 billion times brighter than a standard laboratory X-ray tube.

Professor Wess and his team are now working on the full scale imaging and “virtual unravelling” of documents too fragile to unroll.

They will also use the Diamond synchrotron to examine the nanoscopic structure of parchments such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, which are at risk of degrading to gelatine over the centuries. They hope to develop a simple test to determine the proportion of gelatine in a historical sample.

Professor Wess said: “In addition to identifying ways to prevent the loss of important records from our past, our research aims to understand how we might recover documents damaged in natural disasters across the ages – such as the fire at the Library of Alexandria, or more recently, flooding in the Czech Republic, Italy and Poland, which could leave such archives lost forever.”

Apple launches new iPods

SAN FRANCISCO: Apple on Wednesday unveiled a slick touch-screen iPod and also cut the price of its 8GB iPhone to $399 (Rs 16,200 approx). The new touchscreen iPod – dubbed IPod Touch – features the Safari Web browser and a builtin wireless antenna, meaning users can connect directly to the Internet through Wi-Fi, just like they might with a laptop. It also includes Google and Yahoo search functions into the iPod Touch, along with YouTube video viewing and iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store compatibility.
IPod Touch will be available in an 8GB model priced at $299 (Rs 12,200 approx) and a 16GB model priced at $399 (16,200 approx). The devices are essentially iPhones without the mobile phone capabilities.

“We think it’s one of the seven wonders of the world,” Apple’s chief executive Steve Jobs quipped.

Apple’s overhaul includes matchbook-sized iPod Shuffles in new colours, and iPod Nanos built with video and game capabilities. A 4GB Nano is priced at $149 (Rs 6,000 approx), while the 8GB model will cost $199 (Rs 8,000 approx).

Jobs also officially christened the original iPod model the “Classic”, and said it would be available in 80GB and 160GB models. AFP
